Welcome to Pokhara: The Jewel of the Himalayas

Nepal's adventure capital — where subtropical lakeside life meets three of the world's ten highest peaks.

Nestled in a peaceful valley just 200 kilometers west of Kathmandu lies Pokhara, Nepal's undisputed tourism capital and a destination that has captured the hearts of travelers for generations. At roughly 827 meters above sea level, the city sits in a dramatic natural amphitheater — within 30 miles, the terrain ascends toward Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, and Manaslu.

Snow-capped summits above 6,000 meters rise above a warm, subtropical valley floor — a pairing found almost nowhere else on Earth. Rugged mountaineering spirit blends seamlessly with a laid-back, bohemian lakeside lifestyle.

A Valley Under Open Sky

In Pokhara, the Himalayas are never out of sight — from a café terrace, a lakeside path, or a quiet village ridge, Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna wall greet you anew each morning. Turn any corner, lift your eyes, and the mountains reveal themselves again — and every single time, the view stops you in your tracks.

The History and Soul of the Valley

Long before it became a haven for nature lovers, Pokhara was a vital trading post along the ancient Trans-Himalayan route connecting India and Tibet. Caravans from the north carrying Tibetan wool, salt, and gold descended into the valley to barter with merchants from the south trading grains, spices, and fine fabrics.

In the mid-18th century, the rulers of the Kaski Kingdom invited skilled Newar merchants and artisans from Bhaktapur to establish a permanent marketplace — the foundation of modern Pokhara. Today the valley is home to the Khas community, the indigenous Gurung and Magar peoples famed as Gurkha warriors, and the enterprising Thakali. Wander Pokhara's Old Bazaar to feel that living history.

Endless Activities to Do in Pokhara

Whether you seek extreme adrenaline, quiet spiritual reflection, or deep cultural immersion, no two days in the valley feel the same.

01

Aerial and Adventure Sports

Pokhara is globally celebrated as one of the premier paragliding destinations on the planet. Taking off from the ridges of Sarangkot, you share thermal drafts with birds of prey while floating directly in front of the Annapurna range. For those pushing boundaries further, the valley offers ultralight aviation flights, high-altitude zip-lining, and bungee jumping over roaring mountain rivers.

02

Lake Exploration and Boating

The centerpiece of city life is Phewa Lake (Fewa Tal) — a tranquil freshwater expanse mirroring the razor-edged peak of Mt. Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). Row a colorful wooden dunga to the island-bound Taal Barahi Temple, an essential local ritual included on our Muktinath Darshan & Pokhara Holy Tour.

Beyond Phewa, the quiet emerald waters of Begnas Lake and Rupa Lake offer pristine, crowd-free alternatives.

Natural Wonders and Subterranean Caves

At Devi's Fall (Patale Chhango), the Pardi Khola stream collapses into a hidden earth-tunnel. Across the road, descend into Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave — a sacred limestone cavern with a shrine to Lord Shiva beside the roaring underground waterfall. Further north, Mahendra Cave and the Bat Cave (Chameri Gufa) await on our dedicated Bat Cave & Mahendra Cave Tour.

04

Cultural Sightseeing and Viewpoints

Ascend to the white-domed World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa) or the massive Pumdikot Shiva Statue crowning the southern ridges — both offer panoramic vantage points of the valley floor and glittering lake below.

To look backward in time, wander away from Lakeside and explore the red-brick architecture and bustling spice stalls of the Old Bazaar on our Pokhara Heritage Walk.

The Ultimate Trekking Hub

For over half a century, Pokhara has been the definitive staging ground for expeditions into the Annapurna Conservation Area. From here, paths branch toward the Annapurna Circuit, Mardi Himal, Poon Hill, and Annapurna Base Camp.

After weeks on high passes, stepping back into Pokhara's lakeside cafés and warm teahouses is a legendary rite of passage. As a women-led trekking company in Pokhara based in Lakeside, Green Forest designs departures to the Annapurna Circuit, Mardi Himal, Poon Hill, and dozens more — all paced with Omotenashi care.

Pokhara is not merely a place you pass through on the way to the mountains — it is a living sanctuary where nature, adventure, and timeless hospitality come together in perfect harmony.
